Under The Radar 2014

Under The Radar is an annual festival in New York City that showcases innovative and experimental theatrical performances by cutting edge artists from the U.S. and around the world. It is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2014.

Curated by Mark Russell and Meiyin Wang, this year Under The Radar will have events at five venues over the course of 12 days starting January 8, 2014. In addition to 16 theatrical shows, Under The Radar includes a series of roundtable conversations, a two-day acting workshop, an interactive visual exhibit, and parties at The Public Theater every night.

From acclaimed Brooklyn-based theater company 600 Highwaymen, led by Abigail and Michael Silverstone, in The Record “45 strangers come together for 61 minutes to show us who they are, and who they could be. Part theater, part dance, part group hallucination – vivid human assembly on an epic scale. The subject is us; the time is now.”

El Año en Que Nací

El Año en Que Nací from Lola Arias, a writer and performer from Argentina, is the story of eleven Chileans born under Pinochet’s dictatorship who take to the stage to reconcile Chile’s troubled past through storytelling, photos, letters, recordings, and music. Performed in Spanish with English supertitles.

I Stole Your Dad

Author, comedian, podcaster, and contributor to The Daily Show with John Stewart John Hodgman presents a few observations in I Stole Your Dad.

The Room Nobody Knows

Written and directed by Japanese theater artist Kuro Tanino (formerly a psychiatrist), The Room Nobody Knows explores the dreamlike world of two brothers hidden deep within Tokyo’s metropolis. Performed in Japanese with English supertitles.

Helen & Edgar

Helen & Edgar is a tale performed by Edgar Oliver about his strange childhood in Savannah, Georgia and his mother’s struggle with madness. Oliver is a regular at New York City’s premier storytelling event, The Moth. Helen & Edgar is directed by The Moth’s artistic director Catherine Burns.

FEAST

FEAST, written, directed and designed by Andrew Ondrejcak, is the story of the last meal prepared and consumed by the King and his concubines during the collapse of Babylon.

Sacred Stories

Toshi Reagon and BIGLovely are performing four concerts at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater during the Under The Radar Festival. The concerts are an annual tradition celebrating Reagon’s birthday.

In addition to the concert performances, Toshi Reagon and BIGLovely are doing one performance of The Temptation of St. Anthony and Zinnias, an opera by Bernice Johnson Reagon (composer/librettist) and Robert Wilson (director/staging/lights), on Sunday, January 19, 2014.

Black Out

Black Out from Algerian-born Swiss choreographer Philippe Saire is a multimedia dance performance that “contemplates the randomness of mortality in a world of genocide, disease, epidemics, and senseless violence.”

BigMouth

In BigMouth, writer and performer Valentijn Dhaenens pays tribute to 2,500 years of oration weaving together fragments of modern and historic seminal speeches. Performed in Dutch, French, German, and English with English supertitles.

Rodney King

Writer and performer Roger Guenveur Smith examines the life of Rodney King in a solo performance “revealing a man besieged by the Los Angeles Police Department and an unrelenting media spotlight.”

JDX – a public enemy

From Belgian theater company tg STAN comes JDX- a public enemy exploring democracy through Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People. Performed in Dutch with English supertitles

Blessing the boats: the remix

Sekou Sundiata was a revered poet and performer who passed away in 2007. Blessing the boats: the remix from Rhodessa Jones is a re-imagining of Sundiata’s original show blessing the boats. It is “[t]he story of a man wrestling with illness and mortality, told with humor, honesty, and wonder through a mix of theatre, poetry, music, and video projections.”

Brand New Ancients

British poet, rapper, and performer Kate Tempest brings her unique performance Brand New Ancients to St. Ann’s Warehouse. It is a fusion of spoken word, hip hop, and theater backed by live music. Maxamoo’s Founder/CEO saw the Brand New Ancients at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2013 and highly recommends this show.

The Baroness Is The Future

Excerpts from The Baroness is the Future, a dance performance about the life of artist Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven from ANIMALS, will be performed on Sunday, January 12, 2013 as part of INCOMING! A festival within a festival at Under The Radar. The full performance will premiere at Dixon Place later in January, for more information about the full performance see the ANIMALS website.

ETERNAL

ETERNAL is a two-hour, two-channel, looping video from Daniel Fish in which Thomas Jay Ryan and Christina Rouner perform the final scene from the film Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind.

Frankenstein

From Sean Edward Lewis, the founder of experimental theater company LILAC CO,  comes Frankenstein: “Mary Shelley’s monster has a mate and they are pissed! Theater for the monster in you.”
