FRIGID: Tina and Amy: Last Night in Paradise – Location, Tickets, Reviews

It’s 1997, and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are not yet the comedy powerhouse we know and love. In fact, they’re two broke nobodies, living as roommates in a dingy apartment in Chicago. Not for long, though – Saturday Night Live just hired Tina as a junior writer, and it’s her last hour with her best friend before leaving for New York. Amy, feeling abandoned, is trying to get Tina to finish their mutual project – writing the best sketch ever – before their paths diverge.

Presented as part of FRIGID New York Festival 2014, Tina and Amy: Last Night in Paradise is a completely fictional play by the team at SixTee Collective: Antonia Lassar, Maria Gilhooley, and director Nikki DiLoreto. Whether Tina and Amy were actually roommates (they weren’t) and whether Golhooley and Lassar look anything like them (they don’t, and don’t even try) is strictly beyond the point. This play is about a friendship in jeopardy.

Lassar and Gilhooley give charming performances as Poehler and Fey, respectively. They mimic enough of the actresses’ mannerisms and humor to make them recognizable, but maintain enough independence as to not look like caricatures. Don’t expect a story – it’s more like a series of inside jokes, silly puns, and mini-skits framed as two friends’ last hurrah. The absence of a proper narrative is sometimes too conspicuous, but Gilhooley and Lassar are engaging and the jokes are mostly funny, making Tina and Amy an entertaining hour to spend in the theater celebrating female comedy.

Public Opinion

Early ticket sales have been strong for this show so, if you’re interested, better act quickly.
