See This, Not That – 3/14-3/16
Get beyond Broadway this weekend with these three recommendations.
Move over Avenue Q, there’s a new puppet star in town and his name is Tyrone.
In the hilarious Hand to God by Robert Askins, now showing at the Lucille Lortel Theater, the phenomenal Steven Boyer plays Jason, a timid Christian teen, and his out-of-control demonic hand puppet, Tyrone. Tyrone’s mouth is fouler, his attitude more violent, and urges friskier than any puppet action we’ve seen before.
Avenue Q is here to stay but Hand to God runs only through March 30. You don’t want to miss it.
HERE Arts Center has a very special treat for you puppet lovers out there. This week you can skip the spendy tickets to The Lion King and catch The House, a genuinely suspenseful, funny, puppet, murder mystery.
The House is billed as appropriate for adults and children 10+. It’s only in New York City for five days, performances wrap up Sunday, March 16th.
We’re probably going to make Sky-Pony mad with this suggestion. We mean no ill will towards A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder but Lauren Worsham performs in that eight times a week and the tickets are $35 at their cheapest and the best seats are $250. Whereas Sky-Pony (the band Worsham fronts with her husband, Kyle Jarrow) is performing only once at Mercury Lounge and the tickets are $10. If you’ve got time for only one we’d pick Sky-Pony. We’ll be there.
