Isaac Butler and Real Enemies
Isaac Butler is a friend and co-host on Maxamoo. But in this episode he gets to share with us his project, Real Enemies, that is two years in the making. Real Enemies is a multimedia music piece created in collaboration with Butler, jazz composer and bandleader Darcy James Argue, and video artist Peter Nigrini exploring the history of American conspiracy theories through music and imagery. From the red scare to Iran-Contra, with the help of a Argue’s jazz band, The Secret Society, Real Enemies will look at the stories behind the conspiracies.
Nicole and Isaac talk on this episode about Real Enemies and how the show came to be. In doing so they discuss shadowy cabals, the British monarchy, music as a subversive act, 70’s cinema, Sergei Eisenstein, Roland Barthes, communism, faith in systems, the Warren Commission, the history of the CIA, television spies, fat Hamlet, and The Good Wife.
Real Enemies runs November 18-22 at the BAM Harvey theater. Tickets can be purchased here.
