All the Faces of Family: Hir, First Daughter Suite, Allegiance, and Trapper

The work we saw this week delves into some serious issues and welcome stage representations.  Hir looks at a mother who after a lifetime of abuse chooses to live her life by a new philosophy and her genderqueer teen is along for the ride.  Her older son returns from war to the chaos of his disrupted family.  First Daughter Suite explores mothers and daughters who have lived in the White House in a chamber-opera-esque musical format.  Allegiance is a new musical about the Japanese-American internment and life during WWII for Japanese-Americans.  Trapper addresses female celebrity, hysteria, and friendships.

We’re not all in agreement on each show but these shows offer unique perspectives on these ideas.

Hir (1:20)

First Daughter Suite (16:36)

Allegiance (34:15)

Trapper (45:00)
