Playwrights Horizons’ 2014-15 Season Announcement
Playwrights Horizons announced the lineup for its 2014-15 season today and we are excited.
For starters, playwright Melissa James Gibson (author of This, one of our all-time favorite productions at Playwrights Horizons) will present the world premiere of her new play Placebo with her frequent collaborator, Daniel Aukin, directing (he also directed This).
Samuel D. Hunter (author of The Whale at Playwrights Horizons in 2012-13, where it won loads of awards) will present the world premiere of his new play Pocatello with his frequent collaborator, David McCallum, directing (he also directed The Whale).
We see a pattern: Find great playwrights pair them with great directors and then bring them back together over and over. This is a programming strategy we support.
Also part of the 2014-15 season is Bootycandy, a series of playlets by Robert O’Hara. It premiered at the Woolly Mammoth Theater Company in Washington, DC in 2011. The Washington Post called it “funny, smutty and, on the whole, enticingly subversive.” Sounds perfect.
There’s one new musical play on the schedule, Iowa by Jenny Schwartz (God’s Ear, Somewhere Fun) with music and lyrics by Todd Almond (Stage Kiss, The Tempest, On the Levee) directed by Ken Rus Schmoll (Red Dog Howls, Middletown, What Once We Felt); plus a world premiere play by Heidi Schreck (There Are No More Big Secrets, Creature), Grand Concourse directed by Kip Fagan (The Revisionist, Asuncion); and finally a play, subject and title to be announced, by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Bruce Norris (Clybourne Park, The Pain and the Itch, Domesticated).
