Other Forces 2014
The Incubator Arts Project presents Other Forces, an annual festival of independent theater. In its fifth edition, it presents five productions: a performance for three in a taxi; a modern collection of arias and recitatives; a multimedia reenactment of interviews with Billie Jean King; a musical fantasia with wizards; and an improvisational dance performance.

From writer Alexandra Collier (We Play For The Gods, Women’s Theater Project) and director Meghan Finn (The Downtown Loop, 3-Legged Dog), Take Me Home puts three audience members in a taxi for a journey through the streets of New York City.

Traditional arias with contemporary stories, for example, an outing to a bondage store, I Am An Opera is a autobiographical, opera-esque, production written and performed by Joseph Keckler. For a taste of the show, check out this music video for Keckler’s “Shroom Opera Trip.”

Using archival footage and live performance, Laryssa Husiak, reenacts three interviews with tennis great, feminist icon, queer pioneer, and leader of the U.S. delegation to the 2014 Sochi Olympics Billie Jean King.

Described as a “philosophical musical fantasia,” Blue Wizard/Black Wizard is the latest project from Dave Malloy (the mastermind behind super hit Natasha, Pierre and the Comet of 1812) and Eliza Bent (playwright, The Hotel Colors). Maxamoo attended an earlier run of the show, about which we were lukewarm but hopefully for better things to come. You can read about that here.

An improvised dance performance (i.e. every performance is different) by dancer Gillian Chadsey, sound artist Ivan Talijancic, and video artist Shige Moriya that use texts (e.g., The Seagull, Macbeth, A Streetcar Named Desire) and video (e.g., American Idol, Youtube videos) to examine fainting, delusion, and love.
