R+J : Star-Cross’d Death Match – Location, Tickets, Reviews

We know, you are sick of Romeo and Juliet this season. We are too. But hear us out on this.

R+J: Star-Cross’d Death Match doesn’t have Orlando Bloom or a shiny motorcycle but it has something that no other Shakespeare on stage has — booze, and lots of it.

Theater company Three-Day Hangover, following in the steps of their successful production The HAMLET Project, present R+J: Star-Cross’d Death Match. It is a well-executed, hilariously drunk, comedic production of the notorious tale of two tragic lovers from rival families.

Instead of swords, the Capulets and Montagues engage in a flip-cup battle (the audience is invited to play along), Verona is now Manhattan, and the famous balcony scene takes place with Romeo out on 44th street, amid traffic and tourists, as Juliet gazes through the bar’s window. The curious, amused faces of passers-by and heckling by neighbors adds an amusing twist to the evening.

Kudos to Jenna Panther, an awesome female Mercutio, and the rest of the spirited and fully committed cast. They manage the original Shakespearean text — barely touched — with expected respect and unexpected humor.

Recommended if…

  • You are sick of straight-forward Shakespeare and crave something new;
  • You miss college parties;
  • You are looking for a new idea for a night out with your friends; OR
  • You love well-blended high brow and low brow art.
