To Fool The Eye – Location, Tickets, Reviews
To Fool The Eye is a romantic comedy adapted from Jean Anouilh’s 1940 play Leocadia.
The play is set in a country chateau in France. Prince Albert’s love interest, Leocadia, has died and the prince is devastated. When Albert’s doting aunt discovers that Amanda, a poor hat maker, looks exactly like the deceased Leocadia, she summons the young lady to recreate Albert’s days with Leocadia. As it turns out, the trick of love becomes true love.
Although this seems like a charming premise, the script is poorly paced (dragging through the first act and rushing to a conclusion in the second), the jokes feel forced, and the play’s intertwined critique of the aristocracy and the nature of true love is not well developed. There are, however, some admirable qualities to this production. Jennifer Larkin, who plays Amanda, is outstanding in her portrayal of a smart woman who’s humble but confident and the show starts and resumes after intermission with Jazz music, which is lively and sets a nostalgic tone but doesn’t blend with the noble French atmosphere of the play.
To Fool The Eye is playing in rep with Lickspittles, Buttonholers, and Damned Pernicious Go-Betweens and Candida.
