Early Buzz: The Remembrance Project: The Killing Fields

Red Shirt Entertainment, a young theatrical production company, brings awareness to social issues both domestically and globally via a variety of artistic events. They focus on raw, in-your-face performances, often featuring young talents.

One of their ongoing programs is The Remembrance Project, now in its second season. Conceived by the company’s artistic director, Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj, The Remembrance Project constructs a one-time performance about a historical or ongoing instance of genocide. Their first season dealt with the Holocaust, the genocide in Rwanda, and the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. This season began with an installment on the Trail of Tears in the United States.

Maxamoo attended a performance focused on ethnic cleansing in Bosnia during the 1990s war in the Balkans. The simply-staged show was a collage of historical speeches; cultural artifacts such as poems, songs and dances; and survivor testimonials. Unabashedly, the large young cast depicted the random killings, the rapes, the violence, and the hunger during this shameful period in human history.

Much of the proceeds from each performance go to a non-profit organization. A portion of the ticket sales from the performance we saw went towards the Bosana Foundation, which provides education and mentorship to orphaned and marginalized youth in conflict zones.

The Remembrance Project’s next installment will take place on March 10, 2014 and it will focus on the killing fields in Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s.
