The Pigeoning – Location, Tickets, Reviews

The Pigeoning, written and directed by HERE‘s artist in residence Robin Frohardt, is a darkly comedic puppet show (or “object theater” piece, as we were recently instructed) set in 1980s New York.

As it starts, audience members receive an office safety manual and watch a series of hilarious, paranoia-inducing, 80s-style office safety training videos. Then we meet Frank, an office worker obsessed with cleanliness and strict adherence to the safety manual. Pigeons in the nearby park seem to be plotting against Frank and his pursuit of order. He embarks on an investigation to uncover the pigeons’ conspiracy and, eventually, although he clings to the manual believing it will help him maintain order, chaos overtakes him.

The play is almost entirely wordless (with the exception of the training videos), but the live music by Freddi Price along with the sound effects convey the story quite well. The puppet and the props are finely detailed. All these, together with the seamless collaboration of the puppeteers (three of them operate Frank and two the pigeons), lead to a highly expressive show.
