Paris Belongs to Us – Location, Tickets, Reviews

Based on Jacques Rivette’s 1961 black-and-white film of the same name, Paris Belongs to Us is a multimedia theater production directed by Doris Mirescu.

This production uses a wall to block the actors and main set from the audience and, instead, viewers watch the live work unfold on three side-by-side digital projections streaming real-time video captured by handheld camcorders.

Mirescu’s abstract, contemporary stab at the French classic is a stimulus overload, making the plot difficult to follow. In the end it’s a too-ambitious attempt executed with too-little finesse — especially when accompanied by mediocre acting, the distraction of meandering cameramen, a whole lot of unnecessary nudity, and a thick, odious layer of cigarette and machine-generated smoke.

The abstruse, two-and-a-half hour, no-intermission production was a dizzying and bemusing experience; we recommend it only to die-hard fans of unorthodox and arcane works who are familiar with Rivette’s original film (then you won’t have to Google the plot afterward).

REVIEWS

Time Out New York
In the multimedia work Paris Belongs to Us, director-designer Doris Mirescu once again pays ill-conceived homage to a film classic, this time staging Jacques Rivette’s 1961 Paris Nous Appartient.
