Live from Gramercy Park
Live from Gramercy Park is a new musical performance series at the historic Player’s Club (founded in 1888 by legendary actor Edwin Booth and Mark Twain, among others). The series features theater performers leading jazz ensembles through songs from the 1920s and 30s. The series launched on January 27th with Tony nominee Euan Morton (Taboo) backed up by Grandpa Musselman & His Syncopators. Guests are encouraged to dress with 1920s flair as the Gramercy Park club’s gorgeous main hall is done up like a makeshift cabaret.
Although the Player’s Club is a private club, the Live from Gramercy Park concerts are open to the public.
Maxamoo
It’s a thrill to watch talented young jazz performers shake up the Player’s Club, a notoriously exclusive, old-New-York, members-only, jacket-and-tie kinda place. While we can’t speak for the rest of the series (the lineup for which has yet to be announced), we found Euan Morton and evening’s brass band to be charming and beguiling, singing standards from Gerhswin and other big band usual suspects, often with playful new arrangements. Mr. Morton was comfortable in the cabaret emcee role, wittily spinning stories and tossing off comments between songs.
With tickets starting at only $25, Live from Gramercy Park is a cool way to enter the gorgeous club’s otherwise decidedly closed doors. That cheap ticket price, by the way, doesn’t include food or beverage – and it should be noted, the menu of buffalo wings and flatbread pizzas doesn’t feel quite at home in the otherwise fancy-schmancy digs.
Public Opinion
Nothing on the social media front, but we understand why – the crowd is mostly men and women of a certain age, all of whom seemed to enjoy themselves immensely at the performance we saw.
