In The Park- Location, Tickets, Reviews
Playwright and performer Edgar Oliver (Helen & Edgar at this year’s Under the Radar Festival) and director Randy Sharp join forces for In The Park, a new solo show performed at Axis Theatre in the West Village. Axis Theatre previously presented East 10th Street also by Oliver and Sharp. It won an Edinburgh Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2009.
In The Park employs a stream of consciousness narrative to reflect on Oliver’s sense of loss and yearning. On a bare stage with soft lighting, Oliver tells a story about aimlessly roaming through Prospect Park and yearning for youth and freedom.
In the performance, Oliver tells simple anecdotes that are likely reminiscent of experiences in the lives of many audience members. Oliver treks, metaphorically, through Prospect Park and, literally, through a range of topics related to youth and vulnerability. The performance is more poetry recital than scenery chewing monologue. It includes minimal theatrical devices and it doesn’t explore edgy or controversial ideas. At times there is cause for laughter and at times there is cause for yawning, we found ourselves occasionally bored. Ultimately we were entranced by Oliver’s graceful storytelling style.
