Hounds of War – Location, Tickets, Reviews
Hounds of War by Bill Holland is the inaugural production by Wee Man Productions, a New York City based theater company.
In the play, Jim, a military veteran and recovering alcoholic, relocates with his wife and two sons from New York City to the country. The new setting, however, is not enough to quell the frustration and fury consuming Jim. Each family member struggles with secrets and fear and Jim’s hysteria drives them all to a tragic end.
The strong will of the patriarch, a proud veteran who demands obedience, creates substantial drama in this play. In the name of honor and family tradition, Jim forces his son into the Army, and torn by love, fear, and distrust, Jim emotionally abuses his wife and causes everyone around him great misery.
This play touches on many issues: marriage fidelity, patriotism, alcoholism, sexuality, masculinity, and gender roles in the domestic sphere. By attempting to explore so many topics, this play fails to address any one issue comprehensively. Likewise, by cramming so much into a single story, the play’s emotional arc has little time to fluctuate and the character development suffers. Rather than witness varied characters confront difficult circumstances, all we saw was a sad, angry man destroy his family.
