Death for Sydney Black – Location, Tickets, Reviews
Leah Nanako Winkler’s Death for Sydney Black, directed by Kip Fagan, is part of terraNOVA Collective’s terraNOVA Rx series.
Death for Sydney Black is a raunchy, dark parody of the classic teen movie troupe in which an awkward girl (who, with a simple makeover, is actually extremely attractive) battles the popular, perfect on the outside, rotten on the inside girl for a cute boy and the title of prom queen. In this case, we follow unpopular high school student Nancy as she unwittingly takes down Sydney Black, the captain of the cheerleading squad. Nancy’s sidekick Jen sings, raps, and strums a ukulele to narrate the action.
The versatile, all-female cast and hilarious script in Death for Sydney Black mix Mean Girls, American Pie, and a number of beloved Disney princess tales with bawdy, dark humor, and pop culture references. If you’re a fan of any of the aforementioned movies you’ll probably enjoy this show; we are, and we did.

REVIEWS
New York Theatre Review
Part of me is left wondering whether the production is messy on purpose, because while it distracted me at the start, by the halfway point it complemented the insanity of the characters. It should also be said that this festival has limited time to stage what is pretty much a full production of a new work.
