Inspired by English playwright Noel Coward’s work, The Cottage is an intricate web of sex, secrets, and lies all shockingly unveiled in a single afternoon.
Set in rural England in June 1923, Sylvia van Kipness, after spending a wondrous night with her lover, boldly sends two telegrams: one to her husband, announcing she is in love with someone else; and a second, to her lover’s wife with a similar declaration. It doesn’t take long for the consequences of Sylvia’s scandalous act to emerge, and pretty soon the entire cast finds itself trying to detangle a mess of love and deceit.
Buoyed by a provocative, farcical script and strong performances, The Cottage production gushes with lust and decadence.

As in the comedies of Coward, love, in this case, is a game of chess. But Rustin . . . infuses her characters with something rarely seen in Coward: humanity. The reason The Cottage is so enjoyable is that the figures on stage are recognizable humans, who end up wearing their hearts on their sleeves in a way rarely seen in Coward’s works . . . Most important, The Cottage is funny. Genuinely funny. It is sure to put a smile on even the saddest person’s face.
