The Awake

The Awake – Location, Tickets, Reviews

In The Awake nightmares mix with reality: Nate is kidnapped, interrogated and forced to start life anew; Gabrielle, a foreign actress, catches fire and then finds herself serving as a housewife in America; and Malcolm floats on a bed in a flooded world only to awake at his mother’s bedside where she is in a coma. Ultimately, these three strangers realize they are all connected to the same mysterious corporation, as are their nightmares and realities.

The long opening sequence, where these three characters simultaneously unravel their personal horrors, is so intense it leaves viewers exhausted, gasping for air. Things improve significantly further on, as the actual plot unfolds. This play is as hectic as it sounds with complicated monologues that throw the audience back and forth between fact and fiction, accompanied by elaborate light and sound effects.

30 Rock fans may recognize the actor Maulik Pancholy. He and the other actors are excellent, although one should not attend expecting to see any hint of Maulik’s 30 Rock character, Jonathan the assistant. The Awake is unnerving and disconcerting, as the grim theme demands.

Melodramatic? To a degree. But tastefully so, and also innovative, well-conceived, well-played, compelling, and highly recommended.
