NYMF 2013: The Pirates of Finance
Photos by Seth Walters
The Pirates of Finance is The Pirates of Penzance . . . set on Wall Street. The music is Sullivan’s (with snippets from nine Gilbert and Sullivan operettas), the book and lyrics are not exactly Gilbert’s.
Writer and lyricist Charles Veley conjured the spirits of the musical theater master duo to tell the tale of Frederick Freemarket, an inheritor to his uncle’s investment company, who dreams of helping the world but instead faces a takeover by a hedge-fund shark, insider-trading, and the corruption and cynicism of Wall Street.
Social commentary, witty comedy, and elegant numbers abound. This production is part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival. Its final performance on Saturday (July 20th).
