Private Dancer – Location, Tickets, Reviews
Actress Sage Snakechalmer (that is neither a typo nor a joke) writes and performs Private Dancer, a solo show that examines the glamorous public life and private struggles of the late Hollywood goddess Rita Hayworth. Director Bob Degus toggles between live theater and film, direct-address monologues and cinematic symbols, to portray Hayworth as a lonely dreamer who stumbles when she steps beyond the limelight.
Sometimes the only thing you can do as a witness to disaster is describe what happened. Private Dancer is a poorly written, woodenly performed, bizarre carnival of self-indulgence (Time Out called it“the theatrical equivalent of the selfie”). After a full hour (was it only an hour?!) of rambling monologues, absurd short films, and endless, shallow observations about celebrity, the evening is topped off by an amateurish recreation of Hayworth’s legendary “Dance of the Seven Veils” from Salome (not so much a dance as a series of hops accompanied by swirly arm movements). At its end, we fondly remembered the pre-show announcement and searched wildly for the nearest fire exit.

Time Out New York
“A herky-jerky solo vehicle by and for Sage Snakechalmer, it puts snapshots from Hayworth’s turbulent life into a self-help scenario worthy of Dr. Phil.”
