The Mutilated – Location, Tickets, Reviews
The New Ohio Theatre makes a risky move reviving The Mutilated, a little-known late Tennessee Williams one-act. This dark, bizarre comedy stars performance-art legends Penny Arcade and Mink Stole (man, they don’t name ’em like that anymore) as two lonely Southern women on a morbid Christmas Eve in 1930s New Orleans. The brass band is hot and so are the tempers, as the two belles – one a brash and manipulative drunk, the other a sighing loner with a dark secret – haunt a fateful chilly night.
The critics liked it, genuinely, it’s a New York Times Critics Pick. The Times and others found it hauntingly beautiful, and were particularly moved by Mink Stole’s admittedly fine performance.
But we have to disagree. Penny Arcade overwhelmed this disjointed Williams b-side with an obnoxiously broad brand of humor, upstaging her costars and stomping down genuinely lovely moments in a garish solo parade. We don’t recommend it, but if you want to dive deeper into the Williams canon and are eager to see Penny Arcade and Mink Stole in rare form, we can understand the appeal.

This boozy, jazz-infused revival is as funny as it is brutally honest.
New York Theatre Review
The Mutilated is an excellent production that, with all its bizarre meanness, feels like Tennessee Williams’ Christmas celebration.
Theater Pizzazz
Overall a lively, fun production. In New York it is the first revival of The Mutilated in 38 years and there is no surprise why.
