The Seagull – Culture Project – Location, Tickets, Reviews
Photos by Monica Simoes
Max Stafford Clark directs Thomas Kilroy’s translation of The Seagull, which finds Trigorin, Masha, Konstantin and the rest of the lost souls of the Sorin estate transported to rural Ireland.
Critics are lukewarm about this production of Chekov’s classic, now playing at The Culture Project. The New York Times even notes that it is essentially “a vehicle (let’s face it) for Trudie Styler,” the wife of rock star, Sting. As the choice to set this familiar story in Ireland never really justifies itself, Tyler and a generally listless cast transforms Chekov’s tragic three-dimensional characters into uncomfortably flat hulls. A few bright strokes of color (Slate Holmgren’s deeply moving performance chief among them) are little comfort. This Seagull is likely to bore both Chekov enthusiasts and newcomers alike. Recommended only if you’ve been waiting desperately for a Chekov/Downtown Abbey mash-up
