Hedwig And The Angry Inch – Location, Tickets, Reviews
The cult rock musical Hedwig And The Angry Inch by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask returns to New York with a new production directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening, American Idiot) and starring four-time Emmy Award winner Neil Patrick Harris as Hedwig. This is the first revival since its original run in 1998.
Hedwig, an “internationally ignored song stylist” born Hensel Schmidt in East Germany, survives a botched sex-change operation, arranged so she can marry an American soldier and move with him to the U.S. The soldier abandons Hedwig and she starts a rock band, The Angry Inch, named in reference to the physical remnants of the sex-change surgery. Hedwig And The Angry Inch is a quasi-rock concert performed by Hedwig and her band, telling stories about Hedwig’s life, loves, and struggles.

This show is gorgeous. Hedwig makes a phenomenal entrance by descending from above in extravagant make-up and costume. The design incorporates a considerable amount of video projections and visual effects, which create an exuberant aura to the performance, though the story can be sad at times.
Neil Patrick Harris once again proves to be a remarkable performer. Since the show is formatted mainly as a concert, Harris is front and center much of the time. He adopts a German accent and performs the musical numbers with gushing emotion. His Hedwig is a fascinating figure who is tender, tenacious, humorous, and affectionate. Thanks to Mayer’s soft approach to the show’s heavy emotion, there are no whiny clichés. Hedwig sings, tells stories, and makes witty remarks, the performance is intimate yet powerful.

This Is No Doctor. And No Lothario, Either.
Associated Press
Neil Patrick Harris crushes it in ‘Hedwig’
Variety
[For] all the cleverness of the book and the pathos of Hedwig the character, this is a true rock concert.
The Hollywood Reporter
Harris is beyond fabulous, holds nothing back and plays it any way but safe in Michael Mayer’s exhilarating production
Time Out New York
As the imperious, spurned, fright-bewigged, sweaty glitterbomb at the heart of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Harris makes Broadway rock harder than it ever has before.
AM New York
[This] remains a wildly enjoyable production of one of the most exciting and inventive rock musicals of all time.
Newsday
[Harris] is extraordinarily lithe and buff, irresistibly endearing and way beyond merely game as Hedwig, who takes us on his journey of self-discovery in the guise of an autobiographical concert.
