Playing God

FringeNYC: Playing God – Location, Tickets, Reviews

It’s a dog-eat-dog world when it comes to publishing. In Playing God, two plateaued writers team up with a one-hit-wonder in the hopes of reviving their dusty careers. They battle with their egos and with each other as they try to cope with losing their authorial dignity, admitting their incomes are stagnant, and just getting the damn thing written. Meanwhile, the younger, more successful writer struggles with the onslaught of fame and controversy over his “semi-autobiographical” book.

The writing is snappy and clever. The conversations are like watching an intellectual tennis match. Most of the dialogue takes place over the phone, which weakens the show because there is little face-to-face interaction. Overall it is entertaining, if you enjoy intellectual sparring matches.

REVIEWS

NYTheatre
In Playing God, we get egos, arrogance, and occasionally crackling dialogue, but little of the passionate interplay that one might hope to see in a work about creative exchange.
