Adam & Steve and the Empty Sea revisits the struggle between the gay community and religious conservatives, in this case Mormons. Far from offering a political or theological lesson, this play looks at what happens when two friends with opposing views actually sit down and talk. The outcome is a lot of conflict, some yelling, and a conclusion that is honestly inconclusive, as life so often is. While there’s nothing revelatory in this play from the well-regarded Plan B Theatre in Salt Lake City, it is a reminder that even in 2013 coming out conversations are hard and deep ideological and religious conflicts persist.
