The Flea Theater
The Flea Theater was founded in 1996 by director Jim Simpson, playwright Mac Wellman, and designer Kyle Chepulis — all renowned artists — with a mission to create “a joyful hell in a small space.”
Nestled in the heart of TriBeCa, The Flea Theater is now an award-winning incubator for “non-institutional and resolutely noncommercial” theater, and thus gears its programming towards the experimental and daring. The Flea Theater received a Drama Desk Special Award in 2004 for its adventurous approach.
The Flea Theater is also home to the Bats, its resident acting company. The Bats are show-runners of #serials@theflea, now in its 19th cycle, a late-night theatrical competition in which five teams of Bats present segments from new plays by up-and-coming playwrights, and let the audience choose which three teams will proceed to the next week.
