Family Play (1979 to Present) – Location, Tickets, Reviews
CollaborationTown’s Family Play (1979 to Present) is the result of a two-year residency at IRT and the New Ohio Theater.
Family Play is composed of micro-scenes, lasting between 30 seconds and two minutes, in which a cast of six alternates between numerable nameless roles and relationships – parents and children, partners gay and straight, friends, lovers, peers – capturing significant and mundane moments from life.

Family Play is a compelling look at life from childhood through early adulthood through a series of unrelated, short, scenes. It tackles poignant, relatable moments but steers clear of the clichés marked by standard milestones. There are no marriage proposals, I Do’s, or funerals, but rather bits of dialogue that deliver an honest portrait of life. The stage is round, and the audience is seated on opposite sides of it, facing each other. The staging and short scenes make for a lot of dynamic movement on stage and multi-dimensional flow of actors through the space.
It is not a flawless production, the format becomes exhausting and it trails off towards the end leading to an abrupt and anticlimactic conclusion. As a whole, however, it is a smart and sensitive production.
