Early Buzz: An Octoroon
Playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (whose play Appropriate, which we loved, recently ended an extended run at Signature Theater) has another play opening in New York City this Spring. An Octoroon is a world premiere opening at the Soho Rep in May. It’s a contemporary adaption of The Octoroon, a play from 1859 by Irish playwright Dion Boucicault. The Octoroon was a very popular play in its time. It played in New York and toured the country.
It’s the story of the Terrebonne plantation. Its owner, Judge Peyton, dies leaving Terrebonne in financial trouble and his young and handsome nephew, George, in charge. George falls in love with Zoe, an octoroon (meaning, a person having one-eighth black ancestry). M’Closky, the evil overseer, has different plans for both Zoe and the plantation.
Tickets for the preview period are sold out. General admission tickets for $35 are available for dates following the show’s official opening on May 4th, although some dates are already sold out. Reserved seating tickets are available for $50.
