Early Buzz: Kill Shakespeare
If you’re anything like us, you’ve had your fill of Shakespeare. Playmakers of New York City we beg you: PLEASE STOP WITH THE HAMLET, KING LEAR, MACBETH, ROMEO & JULIET, MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, AND ON AND ON. Why not try something new?
We know our complaint is falling on deaf ears or, as the case may be, the cash strapped bank accounts of theater companies eager to please geriatric theatergoers. That’s why we’re so excited for the upcoming production of Kill Shakespeare by Gideon Productions. It capitalizes on the the Bard’s most famous heroes — Hamlet, Juliet, Othello, Falstaff, Romeo, and Puck — and perverts the narrative by sending them on a quest to find William Shakespeare, a reclusive wizard, who they hope will help them win a battle against the legendary playwright’s greatest villains — Iago, Lady Macbeth, and Richard III.
The production is based on a graphic novel of the same name, written by Anthony Del Col and Conor McCreery who also wrote the stage play. They are teaming up with excellent team at Gideon Productions to present the New York City premiere of Kill Shakespeare at HERE Art Center in March 2014.
