Early Buzz: Bum Phillips All-American Opera
A world premiere from the Monk Parrots theater company, Bum Phillips All-American Opera is a contemporary opera based on the life of legendary football coach Bum Phillips. The Monk Parrots’ artistic director Luke Leonard conceived and directed the production; Kirk Lynn, founder and co-artistic director of the Rude Mechs, wrote the libretto, and Peter Stopschinski, also a member of the Rude Mechs, composed the music.
The production explores the unique character and unlikely career of Phillips, who died last year at 90. He led the Houston Oilers in the 1970s and was known for being a true Texan. Combining football and opera, Bum Phillips aims at pushing “the boundaries of where and for whom opera is staged.”
