FRIGID: Drag Queen Stole My Dress – Location, Tickets, Reviews
In Drag Queen Stole My Dress, part of the FRIGID New York 2014 theater festival, writer and performer Gillian English recounts the story of her broken engagement to be married and subsequent journey to empowerment. The one-woman performance is part standup, part theater, and part storytelling. The events are clearly a sensitive subject in English’s life and the writing and performance of this piece are as much a part of her journey as the stories that fill it.
Is there a more difficult story to tell than one’s own breakup? We think not. As the teller of your own story, you are deeply emotionally invested and utterly lacking in perspective. Massive offenses to you translate to mere slights to your listener. Such is the case here. The strongest portions of English’s story relate, not to her ex or the eponymous drag queen, but to side notes about her family and her stint as a showgirl in a Canadian casino. English is an engaging performer and we don’t begrudge her the catharsis of telling this story but we’d love to hear more about her tough-as-nails mom, funny yet sinister dad, and surly sister rather than her stooge of an ex.
