Early Buzz: Rocky the Musical
The iconic 1976 film Rocky, about an underdog boxer, is coming to New York as a BIG stage musical. The first incarnation of this boxing musical opened in Germany last year and it was a hit.
The New York edition has quite the team behind it: director Alex Timbers (Peter and the Starcatcher; Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson), lyrics by Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime), music by Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime), and book by Thomas Meehan (The Producers) and Sylvester Stallone, the original Rocky.
The production promises to include all of the essential elements: boxing matches, weepy love story, and iconic run up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. As a special feature for swanky patrons, “golden ring” ticket holders (for $199) will get to watch final fight scene from the stage.
Previews begin February 11, 2014.
