Pippin – Location, Tickets, Reviews
Pippin is a revival of the classic 1970’s musical about a young prince seeking his place in the world. It won four 2013 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical.
With acclaimed director Diane Paulus at the helm (she won a 2013 Tony Award for directing this show), Pippin includes many fancy elements to convince you its worth the big bucks charged for a ticket – a score by Stephen Schwartz, world class acrobats, dazzling theatrical effects, and choreography in the style of Bob Fosse.
Reviews praised the visual aspects of the production but were less enthusiastic about the emotional depth of the storytelling. TheaterMania said “Paulus’ crowd-thrilling, award-worthy production is likely to keep audiences flocking to see it for years to come,” while New York Times wrote that “Ms. Paulus’s ‘Pippin‘ is often fun (with an exclamation point), but it’s almost never stirring in the way her Tony-winning revival of ‘Hair’ was.”
Pippin is a good show for entertaining theatergoers, especially out-of-town guests, who insist on going to a “Broadway” show, but if you are looking for more meaningful (and cheaper) theater in New York City, check out our recommendations.
