Betrayal – Location, Tickets, Reviews
If there is a theatrical equivalent to a movie blockbuster, Betrayal is it. It has: Hollywood stars (Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz); a Nobel Prize winning playwright (Harold Pinter); and a ten times Tony Award winning director (Mike Nichols).
This dream team joins forces in one of Pinter’s most famous plays, Betrayal, a play about the consequences of a long affair involving Emma (Rachel Weisz), her husband Robert (Daniel Craig, Weisz’s real life husband), and Jerry, the couple’s best friend (Rafe Spall).
In terms of ticket sales, the show has been doing spectacularly well, of course, and is essentially sold out; but the critical response was not as overwhelmingly positive as one would expect from such a high-caliber team: The New York Post noted that it was “too emotionally distanced and a tad too tasteful” for its subject matter, and the New York Times lamented the excessive use of humor, saying that “maybe if you go expecting a rowdy, dirty comedy you won’t be disappointed.” We agree; the choice to make this 90-minute rendition so light-hearted denied the potential depth of the questions the play poses.
