Early Buzz: Antony and Cleopatra – Location, Tickets, Reviews
In an international collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company, GableStage in Miami, and Ohio State University, The Public Theater presents Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra, edited and directed by Tarell Alvin McCraney (The Brother/Sister Plays, Choir Boy). McCraney is The Public Theater’s newest artist-in-residence and was a 2013 MacArthur Fellow.
McCraney’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragic love story is transported from the final days of the Roman empire to Saint-Domingue on the eve of the Haitian Revolution against the French in the 18th century.
After making its world premiere in Shakespeare’s hometown–Stratford-upon-Avon–last November, McCraney’s production will appear on stage at Miami’s Colony Theatre for four weeks before traveling to New York City’s Public Theater this February.

It’s certainly exciting to see the RSC opening its doors, and to watch McCraney tussling with the junk orientalism that often infects productions of the play, but you wish they hadn’t simply swapped one set of cliches for another.
What’s On Stage
The production is well considered, and holds all the ingredients for a delightful recipe, but is in some way lacking charisma and conviction. Though well executed, I felt Shakespeare’s words were not heartfelt.
Louder than War
The RSC is certainly delivering on its mission to push the boundaries by presenting challenging productions and this production is never less than thought provoking.
