Wild – Location, Tickets, Reviews
Wild by Crystal Skillman (Geek!) is a searing look at relationships in the contemporary world, where sex, love, family, marriage, and infidelity come in many shapes, sizes, and varieties. It refreshingly does not dwell on definitions, a gay man cheats on his boyfriend with a woman, and there’s little handwringing over what to call the offense and whether the aforementioned cheater is gay, straight, or bi. Instead, the play focuses on the emotional impact within the relationship, just like real life where people feel feelings rather than search through textbooks to classify behavior.
Wild gets off to a rocky start with a drunk girl monologue. Drunk girls are annoying, that’s true on the street, the subway, or the stage. But the play recovers when it focuses on the couple at its core, Peter and Bobby. Wild is full of melodrama and the ensemble of actors is committed to delivering performances that match the subject matter’s intensity. There is yelling, kissing, nudity, and sex, all executed with gusto. But there is also reflection and sadness delivered with restraint. Wild is at times raw and uncomfortable and that’s what makes it wonderful.
