59E59 Announces New Season: 5A

59E59 Theaters announced a new series of five plays to be present at Theater A, the largest venue at the theater complex. The series is thusly titled the 5A Season.

As part of the new season, 59E59 announced a new membership plan, the 5A Season Bundle, which includes tickets to all five shows, as well as standard annual membership benefits (preferred seating, ticket discounts, etc). The bundle costs $245 (click here for more details).

The productions announced in connection with the first 5A Season are:

The Pianist of Willesden Lane, based on the book The Children of Willesden Lane: Beyond the Kindertransport: A Memoir of Music, Love, and Survival, is set in 1938 and tells the true story of Lisa Jura, a young Jewish pianist whose dreams of a concert debut in Vienna are interrupted by the Nazi invasion. Hershey Felder adapted and will direct the production. It features live piano performances.

Bauer by Lauren Gunderson details the feud between Rudolf Bauer, once a celebrated painter; his benefactor, the great art collector Solomon Guggenheim; and Bauer’s lover Hilla Rebay, who was also a trusted advisor to Guggenheim. The production notes that “The Guggenheim Museum, originally built to house Bauer’s works, opened without a single Bauer exhibited.”

Ghost Stories is an import from England, there it premiered at the Lyric Hammersmith theater and then transferred to London’s West End. The plot description is deliberately vague so as to not ruin its many twists and turns: “Three men gather, each with an uncanny tale to tell: their chilling stories bleed off the stage and into your dreams.” Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman (writers of the BBC’s The League of Gentlemen) wrote Ghost Stories and, together with Sean Holmes, will direct it.

Lonesome Traveler by Jim O’Neill is a celebration of American folk music performed by nine singers and musicians. It dramatizes key moments in the history of the folk music, starting in the end of the 1950s, and features songs from the era, including “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” “This Land Is Your Land,” “Puff the Magic Dragon,” and “Maggie’s Farm.”

A fifth production is yet to be announced.
