Encores! Off-Center 2014 Lineup Announcement
New York City Center announced the line-up for the second year of Encores! Off-Center — a series of staged concerts dedicated to landmark Off-Broadway musicals. The Artistic Director of this series is Jeanine Tesori, the composer of Fun Home and Violet.
Encores! Off-Center is a recent addition to City Center’s acclaimed Encores! series dedicated to forgotten or rarely-performed Broadway musicals.
This season, Encores! Off-Center will feature tick, tick… BOOM!, Randy Newman’s Faust: The Concert, and Pump Boys and Dinettes.
tick, tick… BOOM! is an autobiographical rock musical by Jonathan Larson, the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning composer behind Rent. tick, tick… BOOM! premiered in 1990 as a solo show starring Larson himself. After his untimely death playwright David Auburn adapted it into a three-actor production. The Encores! rendition will star Lin-Manuel Miranda and Karen Olivo with Oliver Butler directing.

Randy Newman’s Faust is a contemporary adaptation of Goethe’s novel about a bet between the Lord and the Devil. It premiered in 1995. This will be a one-night-only performance. Newman will participate as the devil and Thomas Kail will direct.

Pump Boys and Dinettes is a country, rock, pop musical about a group of gas station attendants and diner waitresses in a small town in North Carolina. It premiered in 1981 and transferred to a larger theater where it ran for 573 performances and received a nomination for a Tony Award for Best Musical. Lear de Bessonet, Director of Public Works at The Public Theater and the acclaimed production of The Foundry Theater’s Good Person of Szechwan, will direct.

Tickets for Encores! Off-Center go on sale to the general public on March 17 at 11 am. Members of City Center will have the opportunity to purchase tickets in advance of that. You can join City Center for $75.
