New Toy Theater and Oakwood Apartments
David Commander is presenting two pieces at the Special Effects festival. The first, New Toy Theater, is a collection of three stories about a plane crash, massive food waste, and the 1819 sinking of the whale ship Essex. Commander uses sampled sound effects, voice modulators, action figures, and projection to create an unconventional, multimedia storytelling production.
The second is an installation depicting security footage from miniature sets, including elevators, loading docks, and a dilapidated apartment complex. The physical apartment complex set is included in the installation and viewers observe a live camera feed capture action figure residents as they discuss their lives and dashed dreams.

Surveillance Punishment and The Black Psyche
Written by M. Lamar, Surveillance Punishment and The Black Psyche is a multimedia music theater piece that explores contemporary and historical perspectives on homosex, surveillance, and punishment. It is loosely based on the true story of Willie Francis, a black man who was sentenced to death and executed for the murder of his white, male overseer and lover.

WAGE ticket prices vary for male and female identified audience members. The production notes that “Figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics tell us that in 2010, women who worked full time in wage and salary jobs had median weekly earnings of $669.
