Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind is the signature show of the funky theater group New York Neo-Futurists. It is a hectic sprint of creativity and energy as the actors aim to perform 30 plays in 60 minutes. The show takes place every Friday and Saturday night, 50 weeks a year.
Too Much Light contains a ever-changing menu of short plays/performance art pieces/skits written and performed by Neo company members. The only guideline is that these plays must be “from a perspective of absolute honesty” meaning the actors are who they are, they are where they are and they are doing what they’re doing; that’s the Neo’s credo.
The play list is rotating and the plays are performed in an order determined by the audience shouting out which play they want to see next. This means no evening’s performance resembles any other.
As the audience shouting suggests, there’s little consideration of the fourth wall at these shows.
The New York Neo-Futurists are an offshoot of the Chicago Neo-Futurists. They have been performing Too Much Light in New York since 2004.
