Rock of Ages

Rock of Ages – Location, Tickets, Reviews

Rock of Ages, the popular 1980s-hits musical, has been performing in New York’s theater district for more than four years now. It was (and is) a New York Times critics’ pick. It toured the country, became a star-studded movie, and is currently in-residence at the Venetian casino in Las Vegas.

Set on L.A’s infamous Sunset Strip in 1987, it focuses on Drew and Sherrie – a wannabe rock star and an aspiring actress. Their love story unfolds while a greedy developer threatens to turn their beloved rock-and-roll venue into a shiny new mall.

Brimming with energy, Rock of Ages is raunchy, carefree entertainment (although you might care about the gaping hole in your pocket, the average ticket price is nearly $100). Featuring all the glam metal hits of the time — Journey, Bon Jovi, and Poison included – nostalgic souls and hair band die-hards are bound to enjoy it.

REVIEWS

New York Times
The frothing piles of pleated, teased, bleached, dyed and fried tresses being tossed around in this new show about the good old days — in this case the 1980s on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles — make “Hair” look tame indeed, virtually Rogaine-ready, the Yul Brynner of musicals. (2009)

Time Out New York
Of the few jukebox musicals to find long-term success on Broadway, Rock of Ages is easily the scruffiest and most shameless.

NY Daily News
Now ’80s classics made famous by artists like Journey, Styx, Pat Benatar and Whitesnake could mean jukebox-musical gold for ‘Rock of Ages.’  (2009)

Village Voice
You may regard a $99 ticket as a wee bit steep, and understandably so, but there’s undeniable value—entertainment value, kitsch value, sociological value—in watching a mob of mildly soused Broadway patrons suddenly, uncomfortably forced to grapple with whether or not they actually like Extreme’s “More Than Words.” (2009)

Entertainment Weekly
With its glaring lack of wit and sophistication, Chris D’Arienzo’s book might well have been cribbed from an episode of Saved by the Bell. (2009)
