Disaster! – Location, Tickets, Reviews
Disaster! is a crazy, fast-paced, musical that lovingly spoofs 1970s disaster movies. It features the greatest musical hits of the decade in hilarious, often literal interpretations. All-in-all it’s an unhinged fun-fest.
In the summer of 1979, the first casino in Manhattan opens on a ship on the Hudson River. A wide range of characters – from a melancholy nun to a has-been diva – find themselves aboard. One such character is a disaster expert who is certain that something horrible is about to happen. To say that he is correct would hardly be a spoiler.
Disaster! features all the tropes of a quality disaster movie and squeezes in many (maybe all?) of the 1970s musical hits. Jokes and puns are thrown at the audience with a dizzying speed. It might be all too much by the end of the two-hour run, but the laughs are worth it.
So far reviews have been very positive (Time Out gave it 5 stars out of 5!), and rightfully extolled the charming and humorous cast. It “accomplishes what it sets out to do,” TheaterMania observes, “it’s a fun parody of a genre that doesn’t really get parodied in the realm of theater.”
Recommended if:
- You don’t understand why sequined jumpsuits and polyester jackets ever went out of style;
- You think “Airplane!” is the best movie of all time;
- You love peppy disco numbers and sappy ballads;
- You love campy, dark, quick-paced musical parodies; OR
- You believe the 1970s was a golden era of music.
