RoosevElvis – Location, Tickets, Reviews
RoosevElvis is a new play from well-regarded, Brooklyn-based, theater company the TEAM. Both the show and the company are led by Rachel Chavkin, a two time Obie Award winner and director of the hugely successful, immersive, electro-pop opera Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812.
RoosevElvis tells the story of Ann, a thirty-five year old meat-processing plant worker living in Rapid City, South Dakota. Ann is struggling with questions of purpose and identity, including sexual and gender, when her hero Elvis and his hero Theodore Roosevelt appear. They represent two very different perspectives on life and they argue for two versions of Ann. The three of them, Ann and Elvis (both played by actress Libby King) and Teddy (Kristen Sieh), embark on a road trip from Rapid City to Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee.
RoosevElvis is the rare production that achieves all three theatrical ideals: It is original, thought-provoking, and entertaining. It is also funny, touching, and surprising. Video projections (an en vogue device, often used to ill and distracting effect) are wisely incorporated in ways that actually expand and progress the story. Both actresses are remarkable, bringing humor, vulnerability, and strength to their characters.
RoosevElvis is having its world premiere at The Bushwick Starr in Brooklyn.
