Ma-Yi Theater Company
Founded in 1989, Ma-Yi Theater Company is a not-for-profit theater company based in New York City. It is an incubator for new works that give voice to Asian American experiences. The name “Ma-Yi” is the ancient Chinese term for the modern day Philippines.
Ma-Yi was awarded a Special Drama Desk Award for Excellence in 2010 “for more than two decades of excellence and for nurturing Asian-American voices in stylistically varied and engaging theater.” Ma-Yi productions have received Obie Awards (Flipzoids, 1997 and The Romance of Magno Rubio, 2003), a Drama Desk Nomination (No Foreigners Beyond This Point, 2006), and numerous Henry Hewes Design Award nominations.
Ma-Yi Writers Lab is its resident company of emerging writers, founded in 2004 on a mission to push Asian American aesthetics beyond stereotypical markers. It is the primary source of production material for the company.
Ma-Yi Theater Company is celebrating its 25th anniversary season in 2013-14.
