St. Ann’s Warehouse
Founded in 1980 under the name Arts in St. Ann’s, St. Ann’s Warehouse is named after its original location at the National Historic Landmark Church of St. Ann and the Holy Trinity in Brooklyn Heights. It originally focused on classical music but has since established itself as a center for daring, domestic and international, multi-genre projects that combine music, theater, puppetry, and more. It was awarded the Ross Wetzsteon Obie Award in 2004 and cited as a “sleek venue where its super-informed audience charges the atmosphere with hip vitality.”
St. Ann’s Warehouse has been a Brooklyn resident since its inception and part of its mission is to activate abandoned spaces for cultural use. In 2001, it moved to an old spice milling factory in Brooklyn’s DUMBO neighborhood, where it operated until the building was demolished in 2012. It now operates in a temporary warehouse space in the same area. Recently, after a long struggle, it secured a permanent home at the Tobacco Warehouse by the Brooklyn Bridge. St. Ann’s expects renovations will be completed and performances will begin there in the fall of 2015.
