FringeNYC: Bradley Cole – Location, Tickets, Reviews

In Bradley Cole, a musical at the FringeNYC 2013 festival, Ian Maxwell is an anti-social, nerdy nobody. He knows computers better than he knows people, which is how he built Bradley Cole, his fictional online persona. As Bradley Cole, Ian pretends to be rich and glamorous and soon acquires a cult-like following on Twitter and Facebook. Ian is flattered and emotionally bolstered by his unlikely online success, but soon finds that his fantasy life isn’t much help solving his real life problems.

The music in Bradley Cole is fun and catchy and the plot will hit close to home for the internet generation. The actors make up for lapses in singing ability with sheer enthusiasm. Ian’s more-than-friends feelings for his best friend felt a little unnecessary – the story didn’t need a romance to be successful – but all in all, it was funny, energetic, and one of the best musicals at FringeNYC this year.

REVIEWS

Theater in the Now
Bradley Cole is like bubble gum pop music. It’s a guilty pleasure you don’t want anyone to know about. The story is current but will unfortunately soon become a period piece.

NY Theatre
Bradley Cole is a satire fit for the media-saturated 21st century, full of good songs, good dancing, and funny, provocative characters.  I think this could run Off-Broadway.

TimeOut New York
You’ll leave the theater humming and tweeting “Listen to Me, Look at Me, Love Me,” amongst other tunes. Try to catch this charming show—or should that be #charming?—before it goes viral.
