FringeNYC: The Accidental Hamlet – Location, Tickets, Reviews
In The Accidental Hamlet, two wannabe actors — the pompous Frederick and the goofy John — take on the difficult task of performing Hamlet all on their own.
The theater-within-theater premise provides the framework for a comedy which weaves scenes from the great Shakespearean tragedy with bits of slapstick: John demands to sing his lines, Frederick is determined to play all the important parts simultaneously, and they depict Gertrude with balloons for breasts.
The two performers, Danny Ashkenasi and Bob Homeyer, are quite endearing as the hold the entire production on their backs, but the production is silly and has little impact. The jokes are often reduced to infantile banter, and the moments of true potential are too scarce for a show that runs nearly two hours.
