The HAMLET Project – Location, Tickets, Reviews
Photos: Lloyd Mulvey
There are a few ways to make Shakespeare’s Hamlet more accessible. For example, you could set it in modern-day New York or make it funnier or turn it into a drinking game. The HAMLET Project does all three.
Taking over the second floor of midtown’s Harley’s Smokehouse, The HAMLET Project orchestrates an alternative universe in which a college Shakespeare Club hosts the best frat party in town. Audience participation is constant, you’ll need at least three pints for this game, considering you’ll have to sip every time the word “king” is mentioned. Without too many alterations to the original text The HAMLET Project manages to make Hamlet absolutely hilarious.
Shakespeare purists might be appalled, as will people who don’t remember why college parties were ever enjoyable, but if you’re game for a different take on Shakespeare – accompanied by drinking — this is a lot of fun.
The group is planning to do a different play every month for the next four months. Next up is Romeo and Juliet in September.
