Summer Experiments: Awake and Sing, Karaoke Bacchae, Hypnosis, and more
This week we saw an eclectic array of artists pushing at the boundaries of traditional theater and making new and unique spaces for themselves. We were impressed by the talented Asian-American cast in Clifford Odet’s Awake and Sing! We were puzzled by the Iggy Pop-meets-Euripides approach to Karaoke Bacchae. Nicole spent three hours mesmerized by Philippe Parreno’s light, sound, and film exhibition H(n)ypn (y)osis in which Parreno scripts space and the live performance was minimal. David visited Rocky and Rhoda’s Lesbian Past at JACK which explores history and herstory and he had a blast at the campy off-Broadway musical Ruthless! Also, Patti LuPone does community theater in Shows for Days.
