Jewels of July: Hamilton, Guards at the Taj, Oklahoma!, King Liz and more
That Scrappy-Doo of a downtown show has moved uptown–Hamilton is back, baby and its on Broadway. We can’t get enough of Hamilton and the creative geniuses associated with the show. Our co-hosts have an extended conversation about some of our favorite aspects of the show and we point out some things that you might miss the first time you see it while it is blowing your mind. But we also get into the nitty-gritty so we’ve noted below for spoilers.
Andrew Lippa’s Wild Party didn’t impress us but the unexpected “wild party” happening in one performer’s pants was our greatest takeaway. And Liz Richards finally learns who Steven Pasquale is. What the what!
We reviewed new plays from Rajiv Joseph, Melissa Ross, and Fernanda Coppel. Guards at the Taj may have closed but we think the play is still worth discussing and we encourage you to read it when published. Of Good Stock felt a little conventional but when the characters stop arguing and start getting real the play gets its hooks in you. Although sports-themed King Liz is in early previews it got us all thinking about young men of color in the sports world and strong women in the workplace. We’re eager to see how the final product turns out.
Finally, Nicole goes out of town to see the new Daniel Fish production of Oklahoma! Every aspect of this experimental production was a discovery.
